The Australia Visit Visa is used by visiting individuals, families and businesspersons to facilitate short travel and tourism to Australia. There are three major subtypes of this visa:
  • Tourist visitor: Someone visiting Australia for leisure and recreation or to meet friends and family. You can apply for this from outside or within Australia
  • Business visitor: For businesspersons making short business trips for business, negotiations or to attend events. You must apply for this from outside Australia

Visitor visas of longer duration are issued to parents of Australian citizens and Permanent Residents. Processing time:

Processing time of visit visas are dependent on several factors:

The duration of the visa  is for five years, you can apply for an extension.

PROCESSING TIME:

Before you submit your visa application ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements. The processing time for your visa is usually four weeks. You can apply for the visa 124 days before the start of your course and you can travel to the country 90 days before the commencement of your course.

If you have any dependents, they can apply for the same Subclass 500 visa. Even if they may not come with you immediately, you must declare your dependents in your visa application. Otherwise, they may not be eligible for a dependent visa later.

UPCOMING INTAKES IN AUSTRALIA

Australian universities have diverse deadlines for application. However, the two general timelines are broadly applicable:
Intake 1: Semester 1 – this intake commences in February and is the major intake for students.
Intake 2: Semester 2 – this intake commences in July.

WORK AUTHORIZATION FOR STUDENTS:

Student Applicant:

  • Students must be over 18 years of age.
  • International students in Australia staying on a valid student visa can work for up to 20 hours per week.
  • An exception is, working as an academic assistant. There is no limit on the number of days academic assistants may work.
  • They are not allowed to be self-employed or work as freelancers.


After graduation students can apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). The visa will be granted based on the coursework and the category under which the student has applied to study in Australia.

AUSTRALIA STUDENT VISA REQUIREMENTS:

Student visa details: The Australia Student Visa  is called Subclass 500.
You will be eligible for a student visa only if you want to study a registered course or part of it on a full-time basis.
The maximum validity of the student visa is five years.
The course you wish to pursue must be registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

  • Issued an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) certificate – this is to confirm your enrolment in an Australian University.
  • Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement – this is proof of your intention to come to Australia only to study and not to settle down here.
  • Four recent passport-sized photographs
  • Certified or notarized copies transcript/document of academic results
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) – approved by the Australian government, this health insurance provides basic medical and hospital cover. You can purchase this insurance through your university.
  • Results of tests in the English language like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE if you are a non-native English speaker
  • Evidence of monetary means for covering all expenses during the period of study
  • If applicable, proof of civil status
  • The Australian University will intimate of additional requirements if any prior to your application
  • Financial Requirements – to get your student visa you must prove that you have the funds to cover your course fees, travel, and living costs.
  • Character Requirement – you must submit a certificate to prove you have no criminal record.
  • Proof of visa fees payment – proof that you have paid the required visa fees.

If there are any other additional requirements, the university you have been selected for will let you know about them.

AFTER YOU GRADUATE:
  • If you completed a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree, you may be eligible for the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa once you finish your course of study in Australia.
  • Graduate Work stream: International students with an eligible qualification who graduated with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). A visa in this stream is granted for 18 months from the date of .
POST-STUDY WORK OPTIONS:

Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa grants post-study work rights to international students who have completed a Bachelor’s, Masters, or Doctoral degree in Australia on a student visa. They can work in the country for two to four years to gain international work experience .

Students can also work under the Graduate Work Stream. They are eligible for this stream if they have graduated with the skills and occupation that is related to an occupation which features in the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This visa is valid for 18 months.

There are varying subclasses under the Australia Skilled Migration Program and applicants must choose the one most appropriate for them. These subclasses are:
  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189): A points-based visa for applicants who have not been nominated by an employer, state, territory or family member.
  • Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190) Visa: A points-based visa for applicants who have been nominated by an Australian state or territory. You can apply for this visa even though you may not be nominated by an employer.Eligibility requirements
    • Experience in a nominated occupation on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List
    • Get a skill assessment report by a designated authority for that occupation
    The Subclass 190 visa is for aspiring immigrants who have the skills and abilities that are in demand in specific states of the country. However, these aspirants might not have the required points to qualify for a skilled independent visa under the Skilled Migration program. The visa is for skilled experts and tradespeople who can be nominated by an Australian state or territory.
  • Skilled – Recognized Graduate Visa (subclass 476): With this visa, recent engineering graduates can work, live, or study in Australia for up to 18 months. Applicants should have completed an engineering course from a specific institution within the past 2 years. The applicant should be under 31 years of age.
  • Graduate Temporary (Subclass 485) Visa: A visa for migrant students who have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Skilled – Nominated or Sponsored Provisional (Subclass 491) Visa: A points-based visa for applicants who are nominated by an Australian state or territory, or by a relative living in regional areas (i.e., except Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, rest all considered as regional cities or areas), to live and work in regional areas. The applicant can move between regional areas. It is a temporary visa valid for 5 years and can be converted to PR after working for 3 years with a minimum threshold salary of AUD53,900 p.a. Applications of 491 subclasses are eligible for priority processing.
  • Skilled Regional (Subclass 887) Visa: A permanent visa for migrants who currently hold other applicable visas

The GTI Program of the Australian government creates a streamlined Australia immigration pathway for highly-skilled professionals to come to the country for working and living on a permanent basis.

10 future-focused sectors are covered under Australia’s GTI Program.
Designed for helping grow innovation and tech economies, the GTI Program will be creating opportunities for Australians – through the transfer of skills, promotion of innovation, as well as the creation of jobs in Australia.

Australian permanent residents and citizens can visit, work as well as live In New Zealand No visa will be required by an Australia PR holder or citizen for travelling to New Zealand.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE GLOBAL TALENT VISA PROGRAM

For an individual to be granted a visa by the Australian government under the GTI Program, they must be “highly-skilled” in any 1 of the 10 target sectors. Targeted sectors for the GTI Program of Australia are –

In order to be eligible, the candidate would also be required to be able to attract a salary – in any of the 10 above-mentioned sectors – meeting the high-income threshold. Currently, by a high-income threshold is implied having the ability of attracting a salary either at or above the Fair Work high income threshold of AUD 153,600. The high-income threshold is subject to an annual adjustment.

Generally, most of the countries look for applicants, who are skilled in their occupation with at least 3+ years of experience, possessing a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification,  who can also prove their proficiency in the English language through various internationally recognised tests.  Further for a few countries where applicants have blood relatives already residing or applicants having an offer of employment from an employer in the migrating country will be preferred

Costs will depend upon the country you are applying & the visa type; normally there will be a visa fee which you will have to pay in the migrating country’s currency. An applicant will have bear the other costs like migration agent fee, notary charges, courier charges, English language test charges, nomination & other authorities fees.  In  few instances like an application for Parent Migration they might ask for security deposit as a part of assurance of support.

Many countries have made it mandatory to have a medical examination done before issuing the PR visa. Normally as a part of the examination process, they check if the applicant is free from the contagious diseases, he/she is possessing good health condition and don’t need assistance or will not depend upon the society or government or will not depend upon their health care system.

Applicants holding a PR will definitely have an advantage and will be preferred by the employers. There are many international job sites  where an applicant can post the profiles and get in touch with prospective employers. It is advisable to have a job before entering the new country so that applicants don’t have to face any problems in getting a job in the new country. It is better to start as early as possible. Do your research to find universities and courses that match your academic goals and aspirations. When selecting universities or courses, you should follow criteria such as location, course duration, tuition costs, accommodation costs etc.  Start planning at least one year in advance to get into the university of your choice.
