What is a Malaysia eVisa?

Applicants must complete the Malaysia online application form by answering some straightforward questions and paying a fee using a credit or debit card.

Unlike a conventional visa, there is no need to go to an embassy or consulate to complete the application. The Malaysia visa grants a single entry and allows a stay of up to 30 days.

The eVisa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

The Malaysia eVisa was created to make it easier for citizens of eligible countries to travel to the country.

The whole application process is completed online, therefore, all a traveler needs to apply is connection to the Internet.

To be eligible to apply for the Malaysia visa online, applicants need to have a valid passport from one of the eligible countries and a credit or debit card to pay the fee. Applications are processed quickly (normally within 1 business day) and the vast majority are approved.

Travelers can enter Malaysia through any port of entry by presenting a printed A4 copy of their approved eVisa along with their passport, proof of sufficient funds, return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation. It is essential to use the same passport for both the online form and to travel to Malaysia.

Types of Visas

Malaysia offers a single entry visa to foreign nationals who wish to enter the country with the purpose of a social visit (tourism). As its name indicates, the Malaysia single entry visa only grants the holder one entry to the country.

The single entry visa for Malaysia is valid for up to three months from the date of issue.

The Multiple Entry Visa to Malaysia is issued to foreign nationals that need to enter the country for business or government-to-government matters. Once approved, it is valid for a period within three to twelve months from the date it was issued.

Indian and Chinese citizens who wish to visit Malaysia with the purpose of a social visit (tourism) are also eligible to get the Multiple Entry Visa to Malaysia. Upon entering Malaysia with this visa type, the holder is granted a stay of up to 30 days. It is important to note that the stay cannot be extended.

These are the requirements and conditions for the Multiple Entry Visa

  • The applicant must provide proof of sufficient funds for staying in Malaysia
  • The applicant is required to have a return flight
  • Tour groups are not eligible to obtain this visa type


However, if the traveler will not be leaving the airport they are not required to get the transit visa. A transit visa for Malaysia is needed only if the person will be leaving the airport and staying in Malaysia for a short period of time.

Because certain countries do not enjoy visa-free entry to Malaysia, a free transit pass can be obtained for stays of up to 120 hours when transiting through Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The traveler must have an onward ticket departing from Kuala Lumpur and the flight should be operated by Air Asia or Malaysia Airlines. Citizens of the following countries are eligible for this free transit pass:

 

Citizens of the following countries are only eligible for the free transit pass if they are holders of a residence permit issued by Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan or the U.S and are arriving or departing from these countries.

The government of Malaysia introduced eNTRI, Electronic Travel Registration and Information system, for citizens of India and the People’s Republic of China. The eNTRI is an electronic travel authorization that grants its holder a stay of 15 days in Malaysia. Indian and Chinese travelers must note that the eNTRI visa waiver is single-entry only.

Getting a Malaysia eNTRI visa is a simple process. The eNTRI can be easily completed online, applicants need to provide a few essential personal details and passport information. Most eNTRI applications are processed and approved within 1 business day. The visa is valid for 3 months from the moment it is issued.

Once an eNTRI visa has been used, the holder will need to wait up to 3 months before they can apply for a new eNTRI. This type of visa for Malaysia cannot be extended.

A visa on arrival for Malaysia is available under certain conditions. Nationals of China and India who are arriving to the country directly from Singapore, Indonesia or Thailand and hold a valid visa for any of these three countries can get a visa on arrival for a stay of up to 7 days.

The visa on arrival can be obtained at Kuala Lumpur-International, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabaly, and Penang airports. However, the traveler will need to provide their return flight ticket and prove that they carry at least 1000 USD.

The visa on arrival carries a cost as well, the traveler should pay 407 Malaysian ringgit (100 USD). Other currency will not be accepted to make the payment of the visa on arrival.

The Malaysia medical eVisa is available to patients who wish to travel to Malaysia for medical treatment, procedures or services. To successfully apply for the Malaysia online medical visa applicants need to meet certain requirements which includes making a medical appointment with a MHTC (Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council) member hospital and submitting a hospital appointment letter.

Patients can stay in the country for periods of up to 30 days using the Malaysia eVisa medical. Foreign patients are only able to use the eVisa to book appointments as Malaysia’s approved private hospitals and healthcare providers. Public healthcare is not available for eVisa holders.

Applicants need to apply for the medical eVisa at least 14 working days before their intended date of travel. The eVisa allows one, singular entry into Malaysia and is valid for 3 months from the date of issue providing the applicant’s passport remains valid.

Foreign nationals who wish to enter an reside in Malaysia may apply for an entry permit. However, there are four categories of entry permits for Malaysia:

  • Investors and Experts
  • Professionals
  • Spouse of Malaysian citizen and child or children of Malaysian citizen below age 6
  • Point System

Each category has specific requirements that must me met.

Investor
  • Is a person with a minimum of 2 million USD fixed deposit at any bank in Malaysia and will only be allowed withdrawal after five (5) years
  • Requires one (1) Malaysian sponsor
Expert
  • A person with expertise, talent and skill
  • Needs a recommendation by a relevant agency in Malaysia
  • Must have a Good Conduct Certificate from their country of origin
  • Requires one (1) Malaysian sponsor
Professionals
  • Professional in any field who has outstanding skills
  • Needs a recommendation from a relevant agency in Malaysia
  • Must have a Good Conduct Certificate from their country of origin
  • Needs one (1) Malaysian sponsor
  • Has worked in any government agency or private company in Malaysia for a minimum of three (3) years and is certified by a relevant Agency in Malaysia
Spouse and Children
  • Must be married to a Malaysian citizen
  • Has been issued a Long term Visit Pass and has stayed in the country continuously in Malaysia for a period of five (5) years
  • Is required to submit a “Surat Akuan Perkahwinan”
  • The Malaysian spouse must be the sponsor
  • In the case of the child or children under 6 years of age, the Malaysian parent must be the sponsor
Point System

Applications are assessed through the following criteria:

  1. Age
  2. Qualification
  3. Duration of stay in Malaysia
  4. Familiarity with the Malaysia Institute
  5. Investment value
  6. Working experience in Malaysia
  7. Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia

Applicants need a minimum of 65 points to be able to submit an application.

To apply under the Point System, the applicant must follow these steps:

  • Application for the Entry Permit must be submitted to the Immigration Department of Malaysia
  • The application must be made in Malaysia
  • All applications require a personalized cover letter
  • Once the application has been submitted, the applicant must attend an interview at the Immigration Department, subject to Police Vetting
  • Recommendation by a relevant agency in Malaysia

The eNTRI visa waiver for Indians is an electronic travel authorization which enables Indian citizens to travel to Malaysia for a period 15 days.

The eNTRI visa waiver permits Indians to visit Malaysia again, although they must wait 3 months until the last visit to Malaysia to obtain another eNTRI authorization. It is valid to use within a period of 3 months with a permitted stay of 15 days in Malaysia. The eNTRI visa waiver is single-entry only.
