Step-by-Step Process for Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Step-by-Step Process for Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1

Complete an Eligible Study Program

Enroll in and successfully complete a full-time program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Your program must be at least 8 months long and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate. If you are enrolled in a non-degree program (like a diploma or certificate), ensure your program’s CIP code is on the list of eligible fields at the time of your application.

Step 2

Check Field of Study Eligibility (If Non-Degree)

If you applied for your study permit on or after November 1, 2024, and your program is a non-degree, you must check if the program’s CIP code is on the list of approved fields (e.g. healthcare, STEM, trades, education). If your program is degree-level (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD), the field-of-study restriction does not apply.

Step 3

Meet the Language Requirement

Non-degree program graduates must meet minimum language level of CLB 5 in English or French. Degree program graduates must meet minimum language level of CLB 7.

Step 4

Graduate and Get Final Transcripts

Obtain an official transcript or letter of completion from your institution confirming you’ve met all program requirements.

Step 5

Apply for the PGWP

Apply within 180 days (6 months) of receiving confirmation of program completion. You can apply online from inside Canada or from outside Canada. Ensure your study permit was valid at some point during the 180-day period before applying.

Step 6

Gather Required Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Final transcript or completion letter from your DLI
  • Proof of language proficiency (if required)
  • Proof of eligible program and CIP code (if needed)
  • Digital photo and biometric info (if requested)
Step 7

Submit Application Online

Create or log into your IRCC account. Complete the PGWP application form (IMM 5710). Upload all supporting documents. Pay the required fee (approx. CAD $255).

Step 8

Wait for Processing

Standard processing time varies, usually between 2 to 5 months. You may be eligible to work while waiting for the decision if you applied from within Canada and held a valid study permit at the time of application.

Step 9

Receive Your PGWP

Once approved, you’ll receive an Open Work Permit allowing you to work for any employer in Canada. Permit validity depends on your program length (up to 3 years) and your passport expiry date.
